Where are the best places to snowmobile in Colorado?
There are endless Colorado winter activities to keep the even most adventurous folks occupied. When it comes to places to snowmobile in Colorado, that’s no different. We wanted to provide you with some of the best places to get started, whether you just bought a new winter toy or are looking to rent them for you and some friends.
Vail Pass
The Vail Pass Winter Recreation Area is one of the most popular destinations to snowmobile in the state and gets a boost from being 2 hours away from Denver. In the thick of winter you will frequently find this place crowded by personal and rented snowmobiles. This is rated as “Easy” up to “More Difficult”
To get to the rec area, take Exit 190 toward Vail Pass Rest Area. Then go to the rest area on the west side of 1-70.
You can park in the designated recreation parking area
Keep in mind there is a fee for anyone 16 and older. These are only $10 and can be purchased at the access points.
Pagosa Springs
Pagosa Springs is a popular winter destination for a lot of activities, but offers a lot of benefits to anyone looking to rent a vehicle. However, if you own your own vehicle, you can find much more to explore. If you want to take it easy and remain mostly on flat ground, stay to the western side of Pagosa. On the eastern side you can explore around Wolf Creek and the East Range rising to 11,000 ft.
Rabbit Ears Pass
Rabbit Ears Pass has 300 miles of trails to snowmobile in Colorado just west of Steamboat Springs, offering sledders picturesque mountain views as a backdrop. This pass was named after the twin towers poking from the trees, but now the ears have eroded and partially crumbled away.
Another popular spot nearby is the Flat Tops Wilderness with over 230K acres.
Breckenridge
Just minutes from downtown Breckenridge you can enjoy more beginner friendly places to snowmobile in Colorado. This is a great spot for anyone new or unsure as you will have plenty of rental spots with expert guides. Explore pristine groomed trails and fields of deep pow, then kick back at any of the local bars and restaurants.
