Farish Recreation Area offers a serene escape for outdoor enthusiasts seeking a blend of adventure and tranquility. Its a lesser known hidden gem near Colorado Springs and just outside of Woodland Park and Rampart Range Road.
Farish has rich history dating back to the early 1960s, the recreational area has evolved into a popular destination for camping, fishing, hiking, and more. It’s even been built out with cabins and gazebos. Its pristine natural beauty, coupled with its convenient location, has made it a beloved spot for local and members of the military.
The area is meant for active and retired military and they check IDs when reserving spots or purchasing their fishing license. Your Colorado fishing license will not work here, you will need to purchase theirs.
Camping at Farish
Tent Camping
For those who enjoy the simplicity and adventure of tent camping, Farish provides numerous campsites nestled among towering pines and offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and smaller lakes. Most campsites are equipped with picnic tables, fire pits, and nearby access to restrooms and showers. There are even a few with electricity.
RV Sites
Farish also caters to RV campers with a selection of well-maintained sites that can accommodate vehicles of various sizes. The RV sites feature full hookups, including electric, water, and sewer, making your camping experience comfortable and convenient.
Cabins
For a more luxurious stay, Farish offers cozy cabins that provide a comfortable and private retreat.

The cabins are equipped with basic amenities such as beds, heating, and air conditioning, making them a great option for families or groups.
Fishing at Farish
Grace Lake
This scenic lake offers excellent opportunities for trout fishing, particularly during the spring and fall months. Leo lake is nearby and offers similar fishing options.
The lakes are stocked with 9-11” rainbow trout from May through September and channel catfish are occasionally stocked in the Academy’s lakes. Grass carp are used to control aquatic weeds and should be released.
You will often see anglers putting their fish in a 5-gallon bucket to stop the crawfish from eating your catch while they continue to fish.
If crawfish is what you are after, you can even set traps to catch them. They love raw meat. There are local rules that require you don’t leave traps out overnight.
Ice fishing is prohibited on all lakes.
Cleaning fish and disposing of entrails in the lakes is prohibited. There are cleaning stations location around the main lake.
South Beaver Creek
a tributary of Beaver Creek, offers a unique fishing experience within Farish Recreation Area. While it may not be as well-known as the larger lakes, this creek provides a more intimate and serene setting for anglers.
South Beaver Creek is home to a diverse population of fish, including rainbow trout, brown trout, and smallmouth bass.
Activities Beyond Fishing and Camping
Hiking Trails
- Farish Trail: This moderate-length trail offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and offers a great way to explore the area on foot.
- Beaver Creek Trail: Follow this trail along the scenic Beaver Creek, enjoying the peaceful sounds of nature and the opportunity to spot wildlife.
Picnic Areas
The area offers several designated picnic areas, perfect for enjoying a meal or relaxing with friends and family. These areas often have picnic tables, grills, and nearby access to restrooms. Please always use the bear-proof trashcan to secure you leftover trash. The campers and park rangers will thank you!
Wildlife Viewing
- Birdwatching: Farish is home to a variety of bird species, making it a great spot for birdwatching. Keep an eye out for bald eagles that can often be seen soaring overhead. They might even swoop down and grab a fish if you are lucky.
- Wildlife encounters: You may also encounter other wildlife, such as bear, deer, and chipmunks.
Stargazing
