Colorado is home to some of the most beautiful and diverse landscapes in the country and as a result we attract backpackers from all over the world looking to explore our 4 national parks or 11 national forests. The summers are a dry, temperate climate, with warm days and cool nights, making it ideal for spending time outdoors and perfect for backpacking.

It can be daunting to get started backpacking. You need a lot of gear, great locations, and the will to spend a few nights without your typical comfort items. However, going can prove to be a more than rewarding experience. To get you started backpacking Colorado, we put together this guide containing gear, tips, and must-visit locations.

Essential Backpacking Gear

When going on a backpacking trip, it’s important to bring the right gear along to ensure that you are safe, comfortable, and able to fully enjoy your wilderness experience. A lighter backpack is important, so to help get you started, we provided what we feel is the most essential gear to pack.

Backpacking pack: Obviously, this is the most important piece of gear, as it will allow you to carry all of your other gear and supplies. Be sure to choose a pack that is the right size and has the features and capacity that you need. We detail the different types of backpacks below to help. Most packs end up weighing around 25 to 30 pounds after fully loaded.

Tent/Shelter: Depending on where you are going and the weather conditions, you may need a tent, a hammock, or a tarp to provide you with shelter. Be sure to choose a shelter that is suitable for the environment and the conditions that you will be facing. Tents are a top choice as it better protects you from the elements, bugs, and anything else that might be lurking about. Look for “ultralight” options to help keep your pack weight lower. These are often more money, but can get down to just a couple of pounds.

Sleeping bag and pad: A good sleeping bag and pad are essential for staying warm and comfortable at night. Be sure to choose a sleeping bag that is rated for the temperature range that you will be experiencing, and a pad that provides enough insulation and support. Klymit has a ton of more affordable options and sizes.

Cooking gear: In order to prepare meals on your trip, you will need to bring along a stove, a pot or pan, utensils, and a water filter or purification system. One helpful piece you can add to your bag is the Jetboil. This has blown up in popularity and can bring your water to a boil in just 100 seconds.

Navigation and communication: In case of an emergency, it’s important to have a map, a compass, and a way to communicate with others. A GPS device, a satellite phone, or a personal locator beacon can all be useful in these situations.

Clothing and footwear: Be sure to bring clothing that is suitable for the weather and the environment, as well as sturdy and comfortable footwear. Layering is a good strategy, as it allows you to adjust to changing conditions. Make sure to pack moisture-wicking items to help prevent wet clothes.

First aid kit: It’s always a good idea to bring a first aid kit on any backpacking trip, in case of accidents or injuries. Be sure to include any medications or other items that you or your group members may need.

Bear Spray: If you are backpacking Colorado, you are going into bear country. Why not add this little piece of comfort? Typically made from 2% capsaicin, these deterrents are designed for an optimal combination of spray time and distance.

Different Types of Backpacks

There are several different types of backpacking packs to choose from, each with its own unique features and benefits. Here are some of the most common types of backpacking packs:

Internal frame packs: These packs have a frame that is built into the pack itself, which provides support and helps to distribute the weight evenly. Internal frame packs are the most popular choice for backpacking Colorado and most elsewhere. They are comfortable to carry and offer a good balance of weight and capacity. They are also designed to be adjusted on the fly to accommodate unevenly weighted packs. Kelty offers a great selection.

External frame packs: These packs have a frame that is attached to the outside of the pack, which provides support and helps to distribute the weight evenly. External frame packs are a good choice for carrying large or heavy loads, and are often used for backpacking trips that require a lot of gear.

Frameless packs: These packs do not have a frame, which makes them ultra lightweight and compact. Frameless packs are a good choice for short backpacking trips or for carrying lighter loads.

Hydration packs: These packs are designed to carry a hydration bladder (a flexible, water-filled container) and a drinking tube, which allows you to easily drink water while on the go. Hydration packs are a popular choice for day hikes or short backpacking trips, as they allow you to carry water without having to stop and dig through your pack.

By understanding the different types of backpacking packs available, you can choose the right pack for your specific needs and preferences.

How to Pack a Backpacking Pack

When packing a backpacking pack, there are a few key things to keep in mind to ensure that your pack is properly packed and that your items are secure and easy to access. Just follow these easy steps below.

  1. Start by packing the heaviest items first. These should be placed close to your back and towards the bottom of the pack to help distribute the weight evenly.
  2. Next, pack your lighter items on top of the heavier items, again making sure to distribute the weight evenly. This will help to keep your pack balanced and make it easier to carry.
  3. Be sure to pack items that you will need easy access to, such as snacks and water, in the pockets or compartments on the outside of your pack. This will save you from having to dig through your pack to find them.
  4. If you are packing a tent, sleeping bag, or other large items, be sure to compress them as much as possible to save space in your pack. This can be done using compression straps or by using a stuff sack.
  5. Once you have all of your items packed, be sure to double-check that everything is secure and that your pack is properly balanced. This will help to ensure that your pack is comfortable to carry and that your items are safe and accessible.

Best Time of Year for Backpacking Colorado

The best time of year for backpacking in Colorado can depend on several factors including your personal preferences, the area you plan to visit, and the type of terrain you want to explore.

In general, the most popular time for backpacking in Colorado is during the summer months, when the weather is warm and dry and the days are long. However, Colorado’s mountains can be quite crowded during this time, so if you’re looking for a more peaceful experience, you might consider visiting during the shoulder seasons, such as late spring or early fall.

During the summer, the weather in Colorado’s high country is usually sunny and warm, with daytime temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to mid-80s (Fahrenheit) at lower elevations, and from the 50s to 60s at higher elevations. Nighttime temperatures can drop significantly, so it’s important to bring warm clothing and a good sleeping bag.

In the spring and fall, the weather can be more variable, with cooler temperatures and a higher chance of precipitation.

Always check the weather forecast and pack accordingly, no matter when you go.
