Spring Creek Reservoir | Colorado

Spring Creek Reservoir is a body of water located in the Gunnison National Forest, Colorado. It’s a popular destination for fishing, camping, and enjoying the scenic beauty of the area. The reservoir is surrounded by mountains and forests, making it a great place to relax and explore the Rocky Mountains.

Weather

  • Summers are typically warm and dry with average highs in the upper 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit (around 25-27°C).
  • Afternoon thunderstorms can occur occasionally.
  • Nights can be cool, dropping down to the 40s Fahrenheit (around 4-9°C).

Dispersed Camping

Dispersed camping is available around Spring Creek Reservoir on National Forest land. Once you make it to the lake, you will pass the reservable spots on your right, if you keep following the dirt road you will quickly see the lake on your right. Once you near the far end of the lake, you will find a handful of camping spots close to the lake. There are more spots on the far side of the lake.

There are no reservations for dispersed campsites. Finding a spot can depend on the season and popularity.

Be sure to follow Leave No Trace principles to minimize your impact on the environment. Additionally, check for fire restrictions and adhere to the 14-day stay limit within a 30-day period.

Reservable Camping

Mosca Campground – This Forest Service campground offers reservable campsites with picnic tables, fire rings, and a vault toilet. Other than the neaby lake, there’s no water available, so plan accordingly.

There are plenty of reservable spots available and the restrooms are cleaned frequently.

Fishing at Spring Creek Reservoir

The reservoir was stocked with various fish species, including rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout. A Colorado Fishing License is required.

The fish here are fairly small but you will certainly see the jumping in the early morning and evenings. Most people you see will be fishing from the shore.

The lake is medium size for a mountain lake and make for great kayaking and stand-up-paddleboarding. Watch out, the lake is very cold though.

Off-Roading

Spring Creek Trail itself is a well-known challenging off-roading trail located near the Spring Creek Reservoir in Colorado. It caters to ATVs, UTVs, and experienced Jeep drivers due to its steep climbs, narrow shelf roads, and boulder fields.

Spring Creek Trail can be a popular choice, especially on weekends, be prepared for other off roaders and challenging terrain.
